Arriving on site at the Qld Conference and Camping Centre, we were ushered to our change room and given details about the proceedings for the night. Although the weekend was Star Wars themed (their second choice was “Under the Sea” and that’s all we’ll say about that.) the kids were not aware that we were attending the event. Thus, we found ourselves waiting outside the hall, under cover of darkness, ready to make our grand entrance. The Imperial Theme music was played over the loudspeakers and that was our cue to march inside. As we proudly entered the room, shouts and cheers erupted like you’ve never heard before. These kids were huge Star Wars fans and they didn’t hold back. The energy was almost palpable.

Once the noise finally died down, I introduced the troops to them and informed them that they had been selected by Lord Vader himself for a very important mission which we were there to oversee. We called them out by name and split them into two teams. Team one was being sent straight to the battlefield (lasertag) to fight for the glory of the Emperor. Team two was going out to assist the Brisbane Astronomical Society in scanning the skies for incoming rebel fleets. We also split into two groups and escorted each team to their designated location.

Once team two had been handed over to the BAS, our troopers made their way back to the lasertag area, where the kids were being handed their weapons and receiving training. Not Imperial Stormtrooper quality training, mind you, but training none-the-less. Soon, the kids were out on the field, blasting away at each other. Although initially it was thought that it would be too dark for our troopers to participate, it turned out that there was enough visibility and we soon joined the fray. As was to be expected, the TK’s did not manage to hit anything but, in an unexpected turn of events, they did manage to survive the whole battle. I must add that there is nothing quite as exciting as seeing Boba Fett prowling through an active battle zone, searching for a bounty.

Halfway through the evening, teams one and two swapped activities and as there were slightly less kids in team two, there were a couple extra weapons available. So it was that cavx and I also tested our mettle in the fiery cauldron of overly-excited teens. I am quite pleased to report that this officer eliminated many of the enemy forces whilst successfully surviving without so much as a scratch... Ok, maybe I took a little enemy fire... Possibly I was killed... a number of times, it’s hard to remember... You know, it’s amazing just how much of a target you become when you’re wearing a uniform!

As the night came to a close, many photos were taken and many of these kids are now convinced of just how awesome the Empire is! Just between you and me though, I think we may have had more fun than the kids.

This is ID-3989, Buzzard, signing off.
