Troop Report
Date: 10-13 November 2017

Venue: Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre

Time: Friday 1pm to 8pm. 10am-6pm Saturday and Sunday.

Mission: Supanova is back and the Redback Garrison will again be out in force to do what we do best, be Awesome!
The more attendees the better our presence will be felt and show just how dominant this empire is!

Trooper Attendance: http://www.501st.com.au/forum/signupsheet.php?eid=1305

Details:

With 81 troopers and support crew and 19 GA kids this was the largest contingent the 501st Legion, Rebel Legion, Mando Mercs and Galactic Academy has ever sent to Brisbane Supanova. With 21m of wall space and a large open area in front of us, we had plenty of room. We appeared on the Supanova map for the first time, as the "Star Wars Fan Zone". We were in a great position, and none of the throng of people lining up for Stan Lee photos could miss us.

The props were:
- Docking Bay 94 with the Eweb and Gonk.
- Falcon Interior with Chewbacca mannequin and R2D2.
- Camp Endor
- Speeder with smoke machine and scout mannequin.
- Tatooine with Gonk
- Wanted Poster.

The Galactic Academy parents built a special forest scene called "Camp Endor". It perfectly suited the kids sitting around the campfire complete the helmet drums and the fantastic hand made Ewoks. Thanks to Cueloopz, Tygress, Cyclops, Mammmsith, Iceheart, Sticky, Redpaint and Dark Dora for the many hours putting that scene together. It was a huge hit with the public. Thanks also to Cueloopz and Payney for the extra effort building the scout mannequin and dressing the Chewie mannequin.

This Nova we had a last minute change in charity, when we learned GA Cadet Eliza Tape qualified for a Smart Pup. We had special buckets to record and recognise the contribution of the GA to raising one of their own. The kids raised an amazing $658.95 towards the total!

BB8 puppeteer Brian Herring joined us several times over the weekend. He had a great photo with the GA, he signed 3 photos to add to the raffle, joined us for the mixer and came back on Sunday to draw the raffle and join us for a group photo. All incredibly generous of him and we are grateful for his support.

Thanks special guest Nick Joseph for joining us. Nick played the medal bearer in A New Hope. He was very generous with his time and very supportive. He also appeared in some Doctor Who episodes, and it was very kind of him to sign the Tardis to thank them for their support. Thanks Cueloopz and Tygress for organising Nick's visit.

Thanks to Studio 49 and Payney for putting together a great panel Astromech Droids and Props. They were on immediately after Brian Herring, so they had a warmed up and enthusiastic audience. The feedback from the panel was great, including the C3PO cameo. Check it out yourself here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/200292656

Thanks to Peter McInally for donating the light saber raffle prize and Badsy for the Darth Vader figure. The raffle charity was the Childhood Kidney Support Network, an amazing group of volunteers who have been supporting Redback events all year.

Thanks to our friends from Hire a Tardis for again contributing an amazing $1230.30 to our charity total. Their display this year was fantastic. These guys are always great to deal with and we appreciate their support.

Thanks to the bump in and bump out crews, the troopers, wranglers, spruikers, raffle sellers, coin counters. Thanks to Payney, Cueloopz, Cyclops and Rubber for enduring the long queue to get vehicles to the loading dock.

Thanks to our assistant GEMs Flashheart and Squid. They have been with us for months going through all the twists and turns involved in organising such a large event. These two are amazing people and they will do a great job GEMing Supanovas next year.

Last but not least is my number one 2IC Dark Dora. Stacey has been tireless in her support and has done an enormous amount of work in the weeks leading up to the event. Stacey booked the mixer two months ago, but the Fox gave away our tables, splitting the mixer in two. Nonetheless we forged ahead despite the split and toasted the Empire.

Stacey's performance over the weekend would not be a surprise to anyone. If she wasn't bouncing around in her jawa on the stands, she was out the front spruiking for Eliza. She encouraged and supported the GA and RL who made great contributions this year. She just simply did not stop working the whole weekend. Again, I could not have done it without you honey thank you.

Charity Funds Raised:
$5007.12 for Eliza Tape's Smart Pup
$876.80 for Childhood Kidney Support Network
Event total $5883.92

Injuries / Malfunctions: The Eweb broke while being moved.

Public Incidents: Nil

Mission Status: Complete Success

Great work and fantastic effort from everyone who made this possible. It certainly was the greatest showing of the Redbacks I've seen at a con and the Vader gathering certainly was memorable.

Jeremy and I (him on his mansick deathbed) are extremely grateful to all in the Garrison, Base and GA school for the effort made before and during Nova. The $ are freaking awesome but the warm fuzzies created are spectacular. I appreciate that when there is this much effort and this much care, there will be angst, stress and squabbles. To claim credit for anything other than teamwork is disingenuous and frankly a blight on everyone's effort. I can think of many people over the weekend who did what they love, what they feel comfortable with and in a way that they pull meaning from. To see this was magnificent and I saw you. I saw the people who feel more comfortable with a bucket on their head. I saw you looking after others. I saw you putting rubbish in the bin. I saw you taking photos because you like that. I saw you bringing your favourite things in to share. I saw the bruises and the armour bites. I saw the sweat and the fatigue. I saw the way you offered to wrangle or got fetch something. I saw you help someone out their costume on. I saw you track down the key. I saw you carry the box. I saw you count the money. I saw you make that kid laugh. I saw you make that lady smile. I saw you get that Mum into the photo. I saw you. I did. And thank you.

Thank you all and thank you to those who sent warm wishes and $ who couldn't make it. Xxxoooo

Huge Thank you to both Dave and Stacey and all the other guys that helped organise the event, you all did an awesome job and the results were nothing short of spectacular!  Bring on BrisNova 2018! Doppeldaumen1

While I'm here I also just want to thank Payney for helping me to Co-host the Garrison Panel on Saturday, it was awesome to have another Redback up there to present with. And also thank you to those that came and sat in the crowd to watch the panel and helped us move all the props onto and off of the stage prior to going live and after the conclusion of the panel, your help was greatly appreciated and it all went a whole lot smoother thanks to you amazing people!  Jig

(On the topic of the panel, I'm also in talks with Nova about getting to post up a trimmed and improved version of the livestream that's just our panel. I've gone through and edited in a whole heap of better visuals like having full screen versions of the slides, animations and video so you don't have to squint at the thumbnail in the corner of the stream to understand what we're talking about, should hear back from them soon and it seems positive thus far, so fingers crossed.)
